Year in Review: Top 5 Projects of 2024

After a year at BEC, Network Coordinator Kale Grant-Clarke has developed a deep appreciation for the practice of architecture. As the year draws to a close, he’s selected five projects that caught our attention in 2024.

“Thoughtful design is something I’ve come to value more and more. These projects have shown me how architecture profoundly influences our experiences and surroundings. Each project is distinct in its design and approach, and I hope they inspire you as much as they’ve inspired me.”

Kaylon Central Control Building
by Bilgin Architects

What struck me about this building is its sleek, futuristic design. It combines functionality with striking visuals, creating a space that is both efficient and aesthetically impressive. Its clean lines and bold form make it a standout in modern architecture. The building’s design also reflects a sense of purpose, as though it was created not just for the present, but with an eye toward the future.

Overwater Bamboo Restaurant
by Atelier Nomadic

This project captivated me with its seamless integration into the natural landscape. Elevated above water and crafted from bamboo, it demonstrates a beautiful balance of sustainability and elegance, creating a space that feels at one with its environment. The choice of bamboo not only enhances the building’s aesthetic but also highlights the possibilities of using renewable materials in modern architecture.

HAJ Cottage by ADR & Formafatal

The simplicity of this cottage design speaks volumes. With natural materials and a contemporary yet cozy feel, it perfectly balances modernity with intimacy, creating a space that feels both personal and connected to the natural surroundings. I appreciate how the design doesn’t overwhelm the space, instead allowing the surroundings to play a key role in shaping the experience.

Qintai Art Museum
by Atelier Deshaus

The flowing, curved forms of this museum give it an almost sculptural quality. The way the design interacts with light and shadow brings a dynamic presence to the building, and I admire how it blends artistry with purpose. The museum’s thoughtful design seems to invite visitors to not just admire the artwork inside, but to appreciate the architecture as an art form in itself.

Whisting Wind Island by AKB Architects

This project’s innovative design is inspired by nature itself. The architecture flows with the landscape, shaped by the wind and elements around it. It’s an inspiring example of how architecture can harness the natural world to create something truly unique. The structure feels almost organic, as if it’s a natural extension of the environment, making it a stunning tribute to the power of nature.
