Gordon Quarter by AJC
The Gordon Quarter by AJC Architects rejuvenates a treasured heritage site on Sydney’s North Shore, blending contemporary design with rich historical character. This transformation of a 19th-century psychiatric hospital thoughtfully respects the site’s legacy, crafting a welcoming residential community that honours its past. With sensitive preservation and modern enhancements, Gordon Quarter fosters a unique sense of connection and continuity.
As AJC Architects celebrates 70 years, how does the Gordon Quarter project represent the evolution of the firm’s design philosophy over the decades?
The Gordon Quarter project reflects AJC’s evolution by integrating modern living with the preservation of heritage elements. It showcases the firm’s commitment to human-centred design, where spaces are thoughtfully planned to provide quality living environments, especially for older Australians. The project balances respect for heritage, seen in the restoration of the Burnham Thorpe mansion, with contemporary design, creating a harmonious blend of past and present. This approach embodies AJC's design philosophy of merging functionality with elegance, while focusing on environmental sustainability and enhancing community connections.
How did community engagement or feedback influence the design process, and what impact do you hope the development will have on the local community?
Community engagement influenced the design by ensuring that the development reflected the low-density residential character of the surrounding streetscape. By incorporating domestic-scale Independent Living Unit (ILU) buildings on street frontages and preserving natural elements, the design responds to community concerns about maintaining the area’s character. The project’s impact on the local community is expected to be positive, offering modern, accessible living for seniors while enhancing the neighbourhood with landscaped gardens and communal areas that foster connection between residents and the broader community.
How does the Gordon Quarter balance modern living with the preservation of heritage elements, particularly the site's historical significance?
Gordon Quarter balances modern living and heritage preservation through a thoughtful design approach. The project retained key architectural features of the Burnham Thorpe mansion, including its grand staircase and terrace, while adapting it for contemporary use as a communal recreation centre and housing ILUs. The new buildings, designed with a domestic language using materials like timber and natural finishes, complement the heritage context while offering state-of-the-art aged care facilities. Environmental sustainability also plays a role, with both new and conserved buildings featuring passive and active environmental design measures, aligning modernity with respect for history.
